James Martin

Born May 2, 18ll in Dublin Ireland. James immigrated to America at the outbreak of the great potato famine in Ireland. Arriving in America with his two younger brothers, William and Joseph, both about eight years of age. They reached South Carolina around 1844. The difference in age of James and his brothers is not known.

James married Mary Ann Todd * in l844 ca. and their first child born l845 her name was Margaret. John the second child was born in l847, followed by Thomas Alexander Martin born December 8, 1848. The family was living at this time in the Western Division of Anderson County of South Carolina. Later the county division was broken down and the area called Varennes township.

One of the younger brothers Joseph and wife Sarah were still in the Varennes area in 1870 running a Harness Shop. He stated that he was from Ireland and both his parents were of foreign birth. This was found in the 1870 Anderson County census. Family tradition has it that one of the immigrant brothers ran a leather shop in Anderson.

He married MARY EVELYN RAULERSON84,85,86,87,88,89 April 07, 1886 in Brevard County, Florida. She was born July 27, 1869 in Polk County, Florida, and died November 11, 1911 in Bassinger, Florida.

Notes for ROBERT LAMARTIN:

Robert LaMartin was born in Anderson District, South Carolina on September 4, 1851, a son of James and Mary Ann (Todd) Martin. He is found in Polk County in on Feb. 13, 1871 on a list of registered voters subject to set as jurors. This list is now kept at the Polk county Historical Library in Bartow. His name was shown as LaMartin at that time so the spelling had been changed by that time. He taught in schools in Fort Mead and Homeland in 1871-1874. A certificate of teachers and report of trustees say Robert LaMartin taught the whole quarter for the Scholastic year 1874 in Manatee County. He also wrote an article printed in the Florida Peninsular, Tampa, Fl, in April of 1871 describing Polk county for those who might be interested in settling there. A similar article for Polk County written by Robert LaMartin was included in The Florida Settler, Sixth Annual Report, Commissioner of Land And Immigration in Tallahassee, Fl was printed in 1874. Copies of his accounts with the Varnes General Store show his purchases on account for the years 1874-1875 in Polk County. Robert is listed as a witness in1876 and 1879 for two cattle sales in Brevard County. Robert LaMartin is shown living in the household of Rabun Raulerson in the 1880 census. He is age 29 and listed as a laborer. A Mr. P. W. Ross, born in Ireland, is listed in the same household as a border and a school teacher. Quite possibly this is an error in that we know Robert LaMartin had been a school teacher. This is in Brevard County, West of the St. Johns River, Election Precinct #11. Since Rabun Raulerson is listed as household #30 and William Underhill is listed as #29 in this census, and from details we know about the Underhill family, we deduce that the Raulerson home was, in fact, in Bassinger in 1880. (Mary Emma Underhill Walker stated in a September 4, 1953 Okeechobee News article that the Bassinger school came into being in1877 when her family moved to Bassinger.) Robert LaMartin was one of the early teachers at this school. From the September 5, 1885 Fort Myers Press we have: "Mr. Robert LaMartin of Fort Bassinger was in town on Tuesday and Wednesday, having brought over 200 head of the best class of beef cattle, which were sold for the Key West market." He married Mary Evelyn Raulerson on April 7, 1886 in Brevard County, Florida. As Bassinger was at that time in Brevard County, the marriage could have been there. Robert LaMartin was a Notary Public and records show that he married people in Manatee and DeSoto counties in 1885 and 1888. Most probably this was at Fort Bassinger, just over the river (DeSoto was made out of Manatee in 1885.) Osceola County was created out of Brevard in 1887 and Robert LaMartin served on the school board from 1888 to 1889. From the History of Osceola County, Robert LaMartin was election clerk for the first election in 1887 in Precinct No. 7. The LaMartin family moved to Fort Drum sometime in 1889 as the third child Esther was born at Fort Drum. in December of 1889. The family stayed there for several years with Robert teaching school there. Robert LaMartin bought 60 acres from William H & Ellen Raulerson on August 5, 1895. He later bought 25 acres from Robert & Laura Alderman March 30, 1899. William Raulerson had sold the land to Alderman in 1895. Both pieces of land are in the NW 1/2 of Sec 26 Township 35S Range 33 E at Bassinger. William Raulerson is an uncle of Mary Raulerson LaMartin. He moved back to Bassinger after purchasing the property and built a log home. He had an orange grove and also grew rice. Robert LaMartin served as a County Commissioner for Osceola County from February 4, 1895 through July 3,1899. In the late 1890's and early 1900's Robert LaMartin wrote a local news column for the Kissimmee Valley Gazette were he detailed the people and happenings in the Bassinger/Fort Drum area. He sometimes mentioned himself in the columns, as in this humorous example from the September 28, 1900 edition: " Major General Robert LaMartin better known as the "Sawgrass Philosopher," has gone to Crabb on business and will most likely go to Tallahassee before he returns." Robert LaMartin died on May 26, 1904 in Kissimmee, Florida and is buried there. His widow, Mary Evelyn Raulerson LaMartin married in1905 Norman McClenithan. Mary Evelyn Raulerson LaMartin McClenithan died at Bassinger, Florida on November 10, 1911and is buried at the Bassinger Cemetery. A monument to Robert LaMartin is placed beside Mary's tombstone.
