Notes for WILLIAM UNDERHILL:
William Underhill born about 1750 in North Carolina where he lived and died in Duplin County. He made his will dated November 25, 1801, which appears in will book "A" page 457 of Duplin County. He died before February 24, 1802 when an inventory of his estate was taken. A copy in the state archives appears to be more complete. He married Spisa, maiden name unknown and they had seven children. He was granted 200 acres of land on Goshen Swamp, Duplin County April 1, 1780. He served in the NC State Militia during the Revolutionary War, as shown by a pay voucher dated Dec. 22, 1781 for 12-10-0. His widow and Joseph and Jeremiah moved to the Wiregrass, Georgia area before moving to Florida.
Notes for SPISA:
Spisa or Spicey whose maiden name is unknown married William Underhill about 1875. William died between signing his will on November 25, 1901 and February 24, 1902 when his will was probated. She moved to Ware County, Georgia with her sons Jeremiah and Joseph about 1827. A female aged between 70 and 80 is listed in the home of Jeremiah Underhill in Ware County, Georgia in the 1830 census. In the 1840 Nassau, Florida census a female listed between the ages of 70 and 80 is listed in the home of Joseph Underhill. This is probably the mother of both Underhill boys living with them in their homes at different times. She is not listed in either home in the 1850 census, indicating that she had died between 1840 and 1850.

He married NANCY HILLIARD30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37 April 13, 1815 in Bulloch County, Georgia, daughter of SILAS HILLIARD and UNKNOWN. She was born 1797 in Georgia, and died Aft. 1850 in Manatee County, Florida.Notes for JOSEPH UNDERHILL:
Joseph Underhill was born in Duplin County,North Carolina, in 1795 a son of William Underhill, a Revolutionary soldier and his wife Spisa. He came to Bulloch County, Georgia along with his widowed mother and his brothers, William, Jr and Jeremiah ca 1810-12. He was married in Bulloch County, Georgia April 13, 1815 to Nancy Hilliard born in 1797 in Bulloch County, Ga., a daughter of Silas Hilliard. He lived in Ware County between 10 and 15 years moving there in 1827 with his brother Jeremiah and their widowed mother and settled in what is now Pierce and Brantley Counties. Jeremiah later moved to Camden County. Joseph Underhill served in the war of 1812 in Captain Lemuel Tippins Company of Georgia Militia. He was discharged at Savannah. He served as Lieutenant in Bulloch County Military 49th district from 1815 to 1821. In the Indian War in this section he was a Private in Captain James A Sweat's company of Ware County Militia, June 9th to August 19th, 1838. The 1840 census of Ware County, shows Joseph and family in the 584th District which at time lay in both present day counties of Pierce and Brantley.
The 1840 census also shows him and his family in Nassau County Florida. He later he moved to Hillsborough County Florida, as he is shown there on the 1850 census. About the same time his wife's brother Benjamin Hilliard and his wife's sister Annie and husband William Willingham moved to Hillsborough County. He is shown living on the east side of Peas Creek about 3 miles northeast of Fort Meade according to United States land and military maps prepared in 1855 and 1856.
Joseph Underhill served in Captain Durrance's company Florida Mounted Volunteers in the Third Seminole War. he joined December 29, 1855 and served until August 22, 1856. He served later from March 11, 1858 until May 10, 1858 in another company commanded by Captain Durrance.
After the close of the Indian War in 1858 Joseph Underhill and his batchler son William along with William Willingham moved into the Kissimmee Island area of Hillsborough County. Neither family is
shown on the 1860 census, possibly due to the isolated area of their homes. The eastern part of Hillsborough County was divided in 1861 and became Polk County. A tax list compiled for Polk County
for 1861 shows Joseph Underhill and William Willingham as taxpayers.
Joseph Underhill's four sons all served the Confederate cause during the Civil War. William and Matthew served as members of Munnerlyn's Cattle Guard Battalion. John served in the Confederate Army in Company E, 7th Florida Infantry. Thomas was a Confederate leader in the Peas Creek area and\
was killed by Union troops in 1864.
Joseph Underhill's name appears on the Polk County tax lists in 1862, 1867, 1869, 1870 and 1877. He
is shown residing in the 1880 census in Pine Level, Manatee County either next to or in the household
of his daughter Barbary (Underhill) Thomas. He is listed as 85 years old and a veteran of the War of 1812 with his wife deceased.
Joseph Underhill applied for a pension based upon his service in the War of 1812 on April 3, 1880. He gave his address as Pine Level, Manatee County. There was a letter written in support of his claim by P T Tucker of Pine Level stating his need of a pension. The claim was rejected March 23, 188l.
Joseph Underhill died shortly after this as he does not appear on the 1885 census for Manatee County.

(WILLIAM1)38,39,40,41,42,43,44,45,46 was born Abt. 1797 in North Carolina, and died Abt. 1879 in Orange County, Florida. She was born January 31, 1807 in Georgia, and died November 1886 in Polk County, Florida.Notes for JEREMIAH UNDERHILL:
Jeremiah Underhill was born about 1797 in North Carolina. He was the son of William and Spisa Underhill. He moved to Georgia around 1920-21. Jeremiah Underhill married Mary Roddenberry on November 29, 1821 in Bulloch County, Georgia. She was born in Georgia about 1805. The Underhill Genealogy states that Jeremiah and his family are shown on the 1830 and 1840 Ware County, Georgia census. In 1850 they are residing in Camden County, Georgia. Jeremiah moved to Florida and is shown in New River County now (Bradford) on the 1860 census.
In the September 1999 issue of Huxford Genealogical magazine it states that Jeremiah Underhill had moved from Duplin County, North Carolina and was living in Bulloch County, Georgia in 1820 and that. Jeremiah and Mary (Roddenberry) Underhill were living in 1830 in Ware county, 1840 in Nassau County, Florida, and in 1850 and 1860 in New River County, Florida. Jeremiah bought Lot 117, 5th District in Ware County containing 490 acres for $300 on September 14, 1840 from John Rewis. Jeremiah bought Lot 15 in the 5th district Ware County, on February 11, 1842 for $200 from John T Clough. On the same day he also purchased Lot 116 in the 5th District for $200 containing $90 acres. On May 26, 1849 Jeremiah Underhill sold Lot 115 in the 5th District containing 490 acres for $250 to Isham S Peacock. He sold Lots 116, 117 in the 5th District of Ware County containing 910 acres for $450 on November 28, 1849 to James Strickland, by Henry Roddenberry of Camden County, Georgia, his attorney. Henry Roddenberry (1812-1861) was a son of George Roddenberry, R.S. 1759-1850. It is very possible that Jeremiah Underhill's wife Mary, was a daughter of George Roddenberry.

Benjamin Guy, son of William and Ann Guy, was born in Chatham County, Georgia September 22, 1816.
He married Mary "Polly" Underhill on November 17, 1836 on the Altamaha River in Georgia. She was the daughter of Joseph and Nancy (Hilliard) Underhill.
Benjamin Guy served in Captain James A Sweat's Georgia volunteers in the Second Seminole War in November and December, 1839.
Benjamin and Mary Guy and their family moved to Hillsborough County, Florida in the 1840's. One source states they were in Florida as early as 1841.
They are shown residing in the Pease Creek settlement on the 1850 census. Benjamin Guy had established a homestead at thirty Mile run, near present day Keysville before the beginning of the Third Seminole War where he had a business of raising hogs.
He applied for bounty land under the act of September 28,1850 for his service in the Second Seminole War on February 18, 1852. He received 40 acres under warrant No. 61,868. He applied for additional bounty land under the act of March 3, 1855 on April 2, 1855. He received another 120 acres under warrant No. 25,446.

After the Indian War had ended Benjamin Guy moved to "Morgan Hole" at Kissimmee Island in 1858.
He had heard about the excellent land for stock in Kissimmee Island, but did not care for the area and
moved in 1859 to a homestead near the south end of Crooked Lake. This lay about 12 miles east of Fort Meade. His home lay a distance from the settlements, therefore he escaped most of the requisitions for cattle during the Civil War. This allowed his stock to increase. He had to drive an ox- team to Tampa for a supply of grain for his horses, which took a week for the round trip.
The first entry in Manatee County's shipping log book states:
Shipped on board the Schooner Eliza Catharine Jno Alder master by Benjamin guy. 27 steers shipped from Hooker's Cowens, North Manitee. March 6th, 1856. Edmund Lee, C. C. C. Manitee.
Benjamin Guy was shown on Polk County's first tax list in 1861. Lists in later years for Polk and Manatee Counties reflect the extent of his cattle holdings. He had 2935 head shown on the Polk County Tax list for 1863. In 1875 the list shows 2000 head and in 1878 he owned 3000 head. In 1877 he owned 1000 head in Manatee County and 1500 head there in 1880. According to "THE KISSIMMEE ISLAND" he
owned between 12,000 and 15,000 head before his death on the Kissimmee Island territory.
Benjamin Guy died on May 16, 1893 at his home near Midland in Polk County. Mary "Polly" Guy is shown on the 1900 census for DeSoto County residing with her son at Fort Basinger. She applied for a widow's pension based on Benjamin Guy's Seminole Indian War service on August 14, 1902 and gave
her address as Ute post office in Polk County.

She was born September 1861 in Florida, and died Aft. 1900.Notes for MATTHEW UNDERHILL:
Matthew Underhill was born December 24, 1840 inWare County, Georgia. He moved with his family to Florida and is listed with them in the 1850 census of Hillsborough County.
Matthew Underhill served under Captain J A Hendry in Colonel J C Munnerlyn's Company of State Home
Guard enlisting in 1863 in Fort Meade according to his pension application. He stated he served until the end of the war. He applied September 17, 1907 and stated he was residing at Bassenger, Florida. He stated he had lived in Florida for sixty eight years. Attesting that they were acquainted with him and had served in his company was 2nd Lieutenant John E. Fewell, now of Ft. Pierce Florida and Joseph R Guy, residing in Tante, St. Lucie County. The pension was approved on October 20, 1907 at the rate of $120 per year. He reapplied on September 6, 1909 under the act of Soldier's Pension Claim under the act of 1909 and it was approved July 26, 1910 for the same amount. He reapplied October 15, 1911. The last application in the file is dated November 3, 1913. He was living in Bassinger, Osceola County at the time of all the applications.
Matthew Underhill married Elizabeth Catledge on September 25, 1873. It is not know if she died or they
were divorced. He married second on November 19, 1879 Isabell Surrency. She was born in Florida in
September 1861. Matthew and Isabell Surrency had four known children. Evidently they were divorced
as she married John Gellul about 1893. She and the Underhill children listed were residing with Mr.
Gellul in Tampa in 1900 as shown on the census. John Gellul was listed as born 1858 in Louisiana and
his occupation is a fireman.
Matthew Underhill is shown on the Polk County census of 1900 living with his sister Spicey Whidden and listed as single. It has been said he had no children, but the Isabell Gellul with Underhill children is almost certainly the same Isabell Surrency that married Matthew Underhill.
Matthew Underhill had moved to Bassinger on the Kissimmee River in Osceola county by 1907 as shown in his Civil War pension application. His brother William Underhill had lived in Bassinger since
about 1880. Matthew is shown on the 1910 Osceola County census as being in Bassinger. He is listed
living in the household of John J Norman as a lodger. His age is given as 72 and he was born in Georgia. Matthew Underhill died on March 16, 1918 in Bassinger and is buried in the cemetery there.
