Notes for WILLIAM W WILLINGHAM:
William H Willingham, known as "Bill" was born in Ware County, Georgia January 25, 1842. He came with his parents to Columbia County before 1845. They move by 1848 to Hillsborough County. William W Willingham served as a private in Company K, 8th Florida Infantry, CSA, enlisting at Fort Brooke on May 27, 1862. He was wounded at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 by a lead ball in the left foot and was captured. He was paroled at Baltimore on September 25, 1863 and allowed to return home on furlough.
At the expiration of the furlough he enlisted in Captain F A Hendry's Company at Fort Meade. During the
later service he was wounded by a lead ball in the right foot. He was declared incapacitated for duty
and returned home. He married Ann E Starling on July 25, 1866 in Polk County. In the late 1860's Bill's father gave his land at Kissimmee Island to Bill and moved to Fort Meade. by 1877 Bill Willingham was
worth an estimated $50,000. On September 4, 1880 Bill attempted to cross the Peace River on a ferry
owned by his father. He could not find the ferryman, his brother-in-law William McLaughlin. While attempting to cross the river and falling into the water he got into a fight with McLaughlin. Bill shot
William McLaughlin who later died on September 12, 1880. Bill Willingham returned to Kissimmee Island and evaded capture by hiding in the swamps for several years. He was captured in 1884 and
went on trial in July 1884. He was convicted of first degree murder with a recommendation of mercy. He was sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor in the state penitentiary. Ann Willingham sold to Ziba King a large stock of cattle and other personal property owned by Bill on May 5, 1886. Bill contested the sale but lost. They were subsequently divorced on November 16, 1893. Bill engaged prominent attorneys to appeal his conviction but the efforts were in vain. He then sought a pardon. In April 1898 Thomas L Wilson of Wilson & Wilson went to Tallahassee and presented petitions for his pardon signed by more than 1,000 citizens. He was formally pardoned on May 23, 1898. With all his assets gone he
retired to a small place on Kissimmee Island. A few friends gave him a small stock to begin again. In
November 1909 his assets included three horses and seventy-five cattle valued at $700. He applied for a Confederate pension from his service in Captain Hendry's Company due to being permanently disabled for wounds received in service. His claim was approved on December 23, 1908 with pay from June 4, 1908 at the rate of $120 per annum. He reapplied under the Act of 1909 on November 3, 1909. On March 8, 1910 the Board of Pensions repudiated his claim as a War Department record showed he was last reported on the rolls of Company K as absent without leave since October 31, 1863, ignoring his later proven service in Captain Hendry's Company. So the twice wounded veteran was denied his pension. William W Willingham died June 6, 1910. He was buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Fort Meade.

Martha Jane Sturgis was born June 30, 1870 and died in 1962 in Okeechobee, Florida. Henry Hancock attended school at the old Bartow institutes. He later taught school at Fort Meade and Avon Park. Henry Hancock and his brother, James T Hancock, Jr. were sent by the Federal government to the Lake Okeechobee region to resurvey an area that had previously been
incorrectly surveyed after the turn of the century. Henry liked the area of Taylor Creek and decided it
would be a good place to live. He returned to Polk County and brought his herd of 106 cattle. He constructed a log house and returned to Polk County for his family. They left Fort Meade in 1902 and traveled five days to arrive at Taylor Creek. They settled on the east side of the creek. Henry was
instrumental in securing the area's first voting precinct in 1903. Henry Hancock was appointed Justice of the Peace for lower Brevard County and later served in that capacity when part of the county was made into St Lucie County. In 1909 he had a boat constructed by Sam Gray to transport oranges to Fort Myers. It was fifty two feet long and named the Serena Victoria for his mother. When a new frame school was built in 1909 Henry Hancock along with Pter Raulerson, Weyman Potter and the teacher, Dr. Hubbard were the trustees for the 1909-10 term. When Okeechobee county was formed in 1917 Henry Hancock was made County Judge. He later served as Superintendent of Public Instruction. Mr. Hancock devoted a large part of his life to public service. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Henry Hancock died January 12, 1950 at Okeechobee. His wife Martha Jane Sturgis died in 1962. They are buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Okeechobee, Florida.
